first

(Cross posted on my design blog.)

Over the weekend, on Valentine's Day, our baby turned one. We celebrated with family early in the day so everyone could spend the evenings with their sweeties.

I had fun gathering items for decorating. From wrapping paper and 12x12 scrapbook paper sheets I made a birthday flag paper banner inspired by Simple Silhouettes (which has some great bridesmaid dresses btw) thanks to the tip from Orange Beautiful.

It's a very easy DIY-although I would recommend to those of you who are uncomfortable wielding an exacto knife to print out letters that are less intricate. It was a fantastic way to add decoration without bringing in any of the traditional licensed characters that most childrens birthday banners are limited to.

Even though it was a baby's birthday almost all the guest were adults so I wanted the decorations to reflect both our baby girl, Valentine's Day and the grown-ups who love her.

Fresh flowers are an easy and always sophisticated decor item. They help your place smell wonderful and you get to enjoy them for a week or so after the shindig is over.

The pink polka dots gracing the table is wrapping paper from Paper Source. It makes a super cheap table runner and I used the extra for the paper flag banner and wrapping gifts making coordinating easy and inexpensive. The babe got her own petite cake and the adults enjoyed cupcakes in either vanilla bean or red velvet.

Happy first Kennedy Jane!
